초록
This paper explores diachronic changes that the Latin verb ’‘habēre'(<haber) has gone through from Classic Latin to Modern Spanish and then tries to search for some factors of those changes. The verb ‘habēre' in the Latin period expressed ‘possession' as a typical transitive verb, which has been transformed now into either an intransitive verb with a meaning 'existence' or an perfective auxiliary verb. The usage of ‘habēre', however, seemed much more complicated in Medieval Spanish since the verb was not only keeping its original significance ‘possession' but was also showing a kind of ‘new' semantic role to express ‘existence', besides the emergence of the auxiliary ‘haber's for the perfective aspect and the future tense. The source of the Medieval haber's polysemy might be found at the ‘possessive' lexical meaning in itself when some logical-semantic similarities between possessive and existential structures are observed. It will be, therefore, revealed that the transition from the possesive to the existential ‘haber' does not include a birth of totally new semantic paradigm but the semantically minor value, ‘existence', of the verb has been transformed into the major one and displaced its possessive meaning.
