This study aims to examine the iconic relationship between Korean round vowel and its meaning from the perspective of phonemic iconicity. It can be seen that vowels have some iconic relationship between their articulatory manners and their phonic images, and these phonic image features are deeply involved in forming the semantic features of words. Among vowels, the basic vowel /ㅏ/ (pronounced /ɑ/) is of the features of [+outward] [+progressive] [+extended]; the basic vowel the basic vowel /ㅏ/ (pronounced /ʌ/) is of the features of [+inward] [+into] [+reduction]; the basic vowel /ㅗ/ (pronounced /ɔ/) is of the features [+upward] [+high] [+bright]; and the basic vowel /ㅜ/ (pronounced /u/) is of [+downward] [+low] [+dark]. In analyzing the meanings of some Korean proper verbs and adjectives composed of these vowels in relation to their phonic images, each basic vowel shows the following interrelationship between its vowel phonic image and Korean proper verbs and adjectives: that /ㅏ/ has about 81 percent of interrelationship, /ㅓ/ is 81 percent, /ㅗ/ has 85 percent, and /ㅜ/ has 89 percent. And entire adjectives show 96 precent of interrelationship. Thus, it can be said that there is a very close interrelationship or motivation between phonic images of vowels and semantic features of verbs or adjectives in Korean.
