Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of Korean SME's before and after Asian financial crisis during the period from 1990 to 2006. For this purpose, our study splits the total period into two sub periods before and after Asian financial crisis to ascertain any change in the role of SMEs in job creation in Korea. Our conclusion is as follows. First, the SME's play an important role in job creation in Korea across the total period, since this study shows the unchanging robust results of the dominant role of SME's for the job creation in Korea utillizing the various measures of employment data: size distribution of employment, new job creation, and firm level data of shortage of employment. Second, micro firms employing less than 9 workers play the dominant role among the size distribution of SME's. Third, the magnitudes of net job creation in SME's is larger than those of Big enterprises. Fourth, the job stability of SME's is inferior to those of Big enterprises.
