Abstract
How to measure job satisfaction of employees in an organization has been one of most important issues in organizational behavior area for many decades. However, the tools to measure the job satisfaction level of employees are not perfect in spite of numerous tools developed by academia because the characteristics of job satisfaction are based on individual's subjective attitudes and also changing over time. This paper is a result of series of the effort to arrange job satisfaction measures developed in Western countries which have been broadly used in Korea with incomplete translation. Among others, some of representative job satisfaction measures in which general job satisfaction level is calculated by the sum of facet satisfaction levels are presented. Measures specifically to measure the job itself in general are also presented. To measure the satisfaction level to compensation and benefits, job security, working condition, supervisor, co-workers, and some other facets are presented. A few comments are as follows: (1) the researcher should have criteria when he/she choose a specific measure among many measures; (2) the researcher need to consider the following factors after he/she decides a specific measure for job satisfaction: translation of original questions into Korean with retranslation process and review from the specialist on translation, the preservation of the original number of questions for validity and reliability, and the determination of weights on each factor if factors are measured; (3) to be careful when new concept or additional questions are added; and (4) to decide whether we need to develop a new measure in Korean.
