Abstract

This study critically reviewed domestic literature on the “meaning of work” to examine issues related to conceptual ambiguity and inconsistency in terminology and measurement. Although constructs such as meaning of work, meaning in work, meaning at work and meaningful work are conceptually distinct, many Korean studies have translated and applied these terms interchangeably without sufficient theoretical differentiation. Moreover, inconsistencies between the intended construct and the measurement tools—often adapted from international scales—are frequently observed. Such conceptual and methodological inconsistencies risk undermining the validity and reliability of research findings and hinder theoretical integration across studies. Accordingly, this study clarified the distinctions among these related concepts and offered recommendations on the importance of selecting measurement tools that align with the research purpose.
