An Analysis of Cultural Contents in English Middle School Textbooks Based on the 2015 Revised National Curriculum

The study aimed at exploring how culture education is implemented in middle school English classes by analyzing 15 textbooks focusing on culture type, culture background and culture lesson activities. The results show that first, the middle school textbooks include the three culture types at a balanced ratio, but the portion of material culture decreases and that of spiritual culture increases as the grade goes up. Second, the textbooks mostly deal with general culture and prefer to present multiple cultures rather than a single culture, which is either Korean or English- speaking culture. The study also finds that the textbooks present visual materials, including photos and pictures in each chapter, to develop students’ ability to understand culture but provide relatively few experiential activities and communication activities. At last, based on the study results, the guidelines for improvement for better culture education in middle school English classes and suggestions for future research are given.
