Abstract
This paper aims at restructuring the sound values of the sheyin in Ancient Chinese and the consonants of ta, da, na columns in Ancient Japanese (Nara period, A.D. 710-794). So far, most scholars who have tried to assume the sound values in Ancient Chinese have neglected the importance of the degrees of aspiration and glottal closure denoting with [ʻ] [ʰ] and [ʼ] [ˀ]. Making use of the concepts of “degrees”, I examined the Sheyin based on the Japanese and Korean resources. According to the Manyou kanas or Japanese phonetic alphabet in the Nihongi (Chronicles of Japan from the Earliest Times to A.D. 697), the two columns of ta and da were used for the initial in ding (定), which means the presence of aspiration. The presence of aspiration is also proved by the fact that the initials in ding (定) and cheng (澄) were hardly used for Korean dental ‘ㄷ’ in Korean resources. We arrive at the conclusion that the Sheyin in Ancient Chinese are respectively [tʼ], [tʰ], [dʻ], [n] and [ʈʼ], [ʈʻ], [ɖʻ], [ɳ], and the consonants of ta, da, na columns in Ancient Japanese [tʼ(tʻ)], [d], and [n].
