Abstract

The present study examines, on the basis of “INKYO” the way in which Ancient-Chinese has been adopted into Sino-Korean and Sino-Japanese. Studies of this area are considered to be highly significant in investigating the phonetic systems of Korean and Japanese languages. In more specific terms, this study describes the ways and rationales as to how Sino-Korean and Sino-Japanes have adopted Ancient-Chinese sounds such as; labials, linguals, velars, dentals, gutturals, semi-linguals, semi-dentals(in the order presented in “INKYO"). Below are some of the outcomes of the study; 1. Both Sino-Korean and Sino-Japanese have discarded trivial distinctions of Ancient-Chinese. 2. Both languages adopted unfamiliar sounds by replacing them with similar sounds in their own phonetic systems. 3. Chinese sounds in both languages, imported a long ago, went through considerable changes along with the phontic changes of their own languages. For example, the morden Sino-Korean is characterized by losses of some consonants and vowels, palatalization, and initial-consonant drop rules. On order hand, the morden Sino-Japanese is characterized by changes in KANA(Japanese syllabary alphabet), substitution with open- syllables, and changes in the syllabic nasal ‘N’.
