This paper pursues contrastive research in Korean and Japanese classifiers, with a special reference their extension and syntactic aspects in quantifier phrases. In extension, classifiers of Korean are more numerous than those of Japanese. It is because of the properties of classifiers themselves while Japanese shows its inclusiveness, Korean prominently shows its individual differentiation. Both languages are similar to each other in that classifiers and quantifiers are generally combined together with words of the same origin. In syntax contrast about quantifier phrase construction, Okutzu(1996), Kamio(1976), and Shibatani(1977) points of argument were introduced, and those were attempted to be verified in Korean. Generally their hypotheses and conclusions have a universality which corresponds with Korean too. Their points are as follows: 1) Quantifiers can float only from subject noun phrases and object noun phrases. 2) Quantifiers in definite noun phrases can not move. 3) Attribute Qs can be located only at a quantifier preceding construction. But Japanese is different from Korean in that when the head nouns and quantifiers are in a position in Japanese, the double case markers are not permitted. And the application of T4 which corresponds to the predicate substitution from Okutzu's transformation rules is thought to be unnecessary. Anyway, in the contrastive analysis of Korean and Japanese, the functions of quantifiers in both languages can be also acknowledged to have similarities in the frames of lexicology and syntax.
