초록
It is well known that the distinction between transitive verbs and intransitive verbs in English is very easy. The transitive verb in English has the direct object without the preposition. Many Korean linguists regarded all ‘eul/reul’ as the objective case ending. But we can find countless Korean sentences which include the intransitive verb and case ending ‘eul/reul’. Therefore we are faced with a difficult question about the distinction between transitive verbs and intransitive verbs. So far, there was no syntactic criterion for the distinction between the transitive and the intransitive, and there was a confusion about the distinction between them. So some linguists regarded verb ‘gada’ as the intransitive verb, but others regarded ‘gada’ as the transitive verb, because not only ‘eul/reul’ but also ‘euro, e’ can precede ‘gada’.(double use verb) In this paper, I make a suggestion about the syntactic criterion for the distinction between the transitive and the intransitive. ‘-eo iss-' in modern Korean can be attached to some intransitive verb, but it can never be attached to transitive verb. Then we can believe firmly that the predicate which can be attached to ‘-eo iss-' is the intransitive verb. Therefore ‘gada’ is the intransitive verb because ‘-eo iss-' can be attached to it. There is no doubt that not only ‘hakgyo-e' but also ‘hakgyo-reul’ which precede ‘gada’, is an adverbial phrase. So I treat that ‘eul/reul’ can be used as an auxiliary postposition to solve this problem. I explain ‘tada, salda, hyanghada, tteonada’ in the same way.
