초록

Evaluation and feedback are very important for foreign language learners in that the improvement in their language skills is based on these two things. In reality, it is unfeasible to have the English pronunciation of Korean learners of English evaluated only by native English speakers. As such, Korean raters must take part in pronunciation evaluation. However, if Korean raters' evaluations of the English pronunciation of Korean students are different from native English speakers', the evaluations by the Korean raters are of no use. It has been reported that there is a reliable correlation between the evaluations of Korean and native English raters. This does not mean the evaluations by any two raters are the same. In this paper, we demonstrate how to find an evaluation discrepancy by calculating the mean difference in evaluation grades between any two raters and investigate systematic evaluation discrepancies between Korean and native English raters. We found Korean raters have difficulty in perceiving English /l, r/ sounds. Thus, Korean raters should bear this in mind when they evaluate the English pronunciation of students.
