Abstract
This study aims to examine the effects of MOOC (Massive Open Online Course)―based learning on students’ competence in English and their levels of satisfaction. To achieve the goal of this study, two classes (experimental class, control class) were chosen to investigate the effects of MOOC-based learning. Participants were 56 students from a university in a provincial area. 29 students of experimental class were asked to watch pre-online lectures about the contents of the textbook used in class. Students were required to discuss main points of the lecture with peers in class. In the control group of 27 students, however, they were given traditional lectures with a translation of the text and explanation on grammatical points and vocabulary by the researcher in class. Surveys were conducted to examine students’ attitudes and levels of satisfaction. This study proposes the needs of adopting MOOC-based learning to boost university students’ overall competence in English.
