Abstract

This paper selects temperature terms― ‘cool’ in English and ‘siwenhata’ in Korean, which have the same literal meaning as the subjects. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the figurative meanings derived from the temperature terms based on a corpus, analyze their meaning extension through the different languages ―English and Korean, and provide the similarities and differences between them. To achieve the goal, this study classifies all the figurative meanings searched from a corpus by means of semantically common characteristics, examines cognitive mechanisms for their meaning extension which are metonymy, metaphor or conceptual blending, and compares the meanings between ‘cool’ in English and‘siwenhata’ in Korean.
