Abstract

This study compares Korean (‘뜨겁다’, ‘따뜻하다’, ‘덥다’) and Russian (‘горячий’, ‘тёплый’, ‘жаркий’) thermal sensory adjectives to explore how each language perceives and expresses heat. Based on prototype theory, it examines how these adjectives extend from physical meanings to socio-cultural and emotional-psychological dimensions. While both languages share similar sensory experiences, they differ in semantic expansion due to cultural and pragmatic factors. Russian uses a smaller set of adjectives with broader abstract meanings, whereas Korean offers more fine-grained distinctions. For example, both ‘따뜻하다’ and ‘тёплый’ convey emotional warmth, but Russian uses them more idiomatically, while Korean focuses on relational emotions. ‘덥다’ and ‘жаркий’ both describe physical heat and urgent or intense situations, though Russian shows broader contextual use. Moreover, Russian subtly differentiates emotional intensity between ‘горячий’ and ‘жаркий’, while Korean emphasizes physical or emotional intensity through ‘뜨겁다’ and ‘덥다’. The findings highlight that thermal adjectives reflect not only physical sensations but also cultural values and emotional expression. These differences show that such adjectives do not map one-to-one across languages and offer useful insights for language learning, translation, and cross-cultural communication.
