초록

English prepositions constitute an important grammatical category since their functions form a wide range of conceptual spectrum and their formal shapes stretch across simple and complex constructions. For the non-discrete nature of the grammatical category both in form and function, their emergence bears particular significance in grammaticalization studies. This paper investigates the borders between the syntactic constructions (SCs) and the complex prepositions (CPs), largely divided by their shapes, i.e., [in the N P] and [in N P], respectively. It is argued that the major determining factors between these two groups are relationality and conceptual centrality. Drawing upon a quantitative analysis, it also challenges the widely accepted notion that high frequency is a precondition of grammaticalization.
