This paper discusses the emergence of the English complex preposition (CP) in addition to. This paper shows the processes that the CP in addition to have historically undergone on the way to its grammaticalization. According to this paper, the CP in addition to under discussion originated abruptly, and analogy is the mechanism which enables this abrupt grammaticalization. Due to defocalization by information structuring, in addition to has changed in semantic, syntactic, and morphologic aspects. Besides the discussion on the grammaticalization, utilizing corpus data, this paper gives a quantitative analysis of the linguistic conditions when in addition to is preferred. This paper also shows the development of in addition to toward a discourse marker. As a discourse marker, it functions in two ways: as a speech keeper and a device to show the speaker's attitude toward his/her speech.
