초록

This study aims to investigate whether case stacking is optionally permissible or obligatory in Korean through acceptability judgment testing. When presented without context, ‘case-stacked’ sentences consistently exhibit low acceptability scores (typically under 2 out of 5), and no instances have been observed where case stacking is necessary to rectify ill-formed sentences. Meanwhile, in ‘with context' conditions, case stacking has been more permissible than in ‘without context' conditions; nonetheless, the contextual effects are not robust enough to render the case-stacked sentences fully acceptable. Even in ‘with context' conditions, case-stacking is not as felicitous as non-stacking. These findings cast doubt on the widespread assumption of prior studies that report case stacking as generally acceptable in Korean; instead, we should focus on examining why case stacking is less acceptable or unacceptable and consider how it aligns with principles of economy and minimality.
