초록

This paper analyzes the usage of ‘red’ and ‘black’ vocabulary, which originates from English, in Korea and Japan. The main research findings are summarized as follows. Firstly, the usage of both ‘red’ and ‘black’ words and expressions is more extensive in Korean compared to Japanese, and they have a larger vocabulary. Secondly, there are instances where some English-derived color vocabulary is interpreted differently in Korea and Japan. For example, the term ‘red line’ signifies ‘political and economic’ in Korean, while in Japanese, it is associated with ‘sports.’ Thirdly, the combination of ‘English + English’ is overwhelmingly predominant in both Korean and Japanese. Fourthly, concerning the color ‘red,’ Korean exhibits a greater number of modified and coined words. Fifthly, ‘black’ is perceived positively in Korean, indicating ‘high-end, luxury brands,’ which is a usage not found in Japanese.
