초록

The aim of this study is to examine which kinds of English adjectives are ‘licensed’ by progressives. In order to provide empirical evidence of the adjectives’ progressives, data came from the British National Corpus web. Wmatrix, which is a software tool for corpus analysis and comparison, was used to analyze the semantic categories of the adjectives. The results are as follows: firstly, the frequency of the types is 276 and the number of the words is 151 adjectives that are used with progressives. Among the adjectives, silly is the most commonly used, and then stupid, unfair, honest, serious, rude in that order. Secondly, the semantics of the adjectives are related to personality, human relations, and attitudes toward a person or an entity.
