Abstract
Exploitation and exploration are known to have diverse effects on management strategy, organizational learning, organizational innovation, and competitive advantage creation. Exploitation and exploration is considered as an output of corporate decision making and as an input for organizational performance. Because many researchers use these concepts without drawing a distinction, they have mixed research results. In this study, we investigate the effects of exploitation and exploration on firm performance by dividing it into input attributes and output attributes. We believe that our study will clearly show the role of exploration and exploitation in the organization learning aspect. We used patent data from the US industry for empirical tests. As a result of our analysis, it was confirmed that the exploitation with the input and the output attributes have a positive effect on the short-term firm performance. On the other hand, exploration with the input and the output attributes did not have a significant impact on short-term firm performance. This study is the first empirical one that draws a distinction between exploitation and exploration in terms of input and output attributes. This study is expected to show the different characteristics of exploitation and exploration, which will provide researchers with guidelines for studying the causes and results of exploitation and exploration.
