Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of emotional labor from patients and from doctors or colleagues on job burnout in order to verify the moderating effect of social support. With the expansion of the service industry across all fields of businesses, people’s interest in emotional labor and emotional workers has increased. A number of researchers believe that emotional labor is likely to occur in all jobs and professions in the modern society. However, most prior studies on emotional labor only deal with the emotional labor that takes place in the process of providing services to customers. On the other hand, this research will measure the effects of emotional labor on job burnout by sorting the subjects of hospital nurses into patients, doctors and colleagues to confirm if social support has power to modulate the effects of emotional labor on job burnout. Using quota sampling, data were derived for this analysis from a total of 225 nurses working in hospitals in Korea. The major results of this study were as follows. First, during the process of providing emotional labor for patients, the surface acting had a positive effect on exhaustion, on a sub level of job burnout, but did not have a significant effect on psychological disengagement from work. During the emotional labor for patients, the deep acting did not influence exhaustion but had a negative effect on psychological disengagement from work. Second, the surface acting during emotional labor towards doctors and colleagues had a positive effect on exhaustion, on a sub level of job burnout, but did not influence psychological disengagement from work. The deep acting during emotional labor towards doctors and colleagues had negative effects on both exhaustion, on a sub level of job burnout, and psychological disengagement from work. Third, the effect of surface acting on exhaustion during emotional labor for patients, social support had a negative impact on exhaustion, and did not influence psychological disengagement from work. In the effects of deep acting on exhaustion during emotional labor for patients, social support did not influence exhaustion and had negative effects on psychological disengagement from work. Finally, the effect of surface acting on exhaustion during emotional labor towards doctors and colleagues, social support did not affect both exhaustion and psychological disengagement from work. While exhaustion did not influence the effects of deep acting on exhaustion from emotional labor for patients, it still had a negative impact on psychological disengagement from work. Through the results of this study, it is possible to examine the effects of surface acting and deep acting, which are the sub level of emotional labor, on the exhaustion and psychological disengagement from work, which are the lower level of job burnout. The emotional labor of nurses can be seen in not only during the process of treating patients, but also during the process of dealing with doctors and colleagues.
