Haunted by History: Heinz Insu Fenkl’s Memories of My Ghost Brother and “Ghostly” Politics in the Shadow of Empire

'유령 형의 기억들' 독일계 미국인 아버지와 한국인 어머니 사이에서 태어난 펭클이 자신이 유년기를 보냈던 1960년대 부평의 미군기지촌을 배경으로 혼혈아들과 그 가족들 등 기지촌 사람들의 이야기를 담은 자전적 소설이다. 이들은 미국의 제국주의 및 한국의 민족주의적 역사의 변경을 떠도는 “벌거벗은 생명”(bare life)들로 탈냉전의 시대에 여전히 출몰하여 현재의 우리들을 역사와 주체가 촘촘히 얽혀 있는 사회적 삶의 영역으로 다시 이끌어 기억을 환기시키고 변화를 향한 인식을 독력하는 역사의 유령이라고 할 수 있다. 펭클은 자신의 문학적 작업을 통해 주류 역사에서 잊혀진 이들의 존재를 현실의 영역으로 다시 불러들임으로써 층층이 쌓여 있는 기억의 퇴적층을 재발굴하여 역사의 기억을 다시 쓰고자 한다.
