Abstract

"Memories of My Ghost Brother", written by Heinz Insu Fenkl has Bucheon and Youngsan G.I. Camp towns, first military camp towns of South Korea built in 1960s as background and "Amerasian" and bystanders of G.I. camp towns in Korea as main characters. Also, it has validity to be included as Korean literatures since its story is based on Korean sentiment and folksy contents of shamanism such as the Yin-Yang and the five elements theory and folktales. In addition to that, Heinz Insu Fenkl's "Memories of My Ghost Brother"'s awareness of its thematic trend and genre, which is not too different from other Korean literatures and its internal traits, which is also close to a Korean literature can determine can be a good reason why it can be included as Korean literatures. Existing literatures regarding G.I.camp towns have male elite narrator and female prostitute narrators with several experiences of violence as main charactors and have characteristics of literatures of Accusation. However, "Memories of My Ghost Brother" paints life of G.I. camp towns from sight of half-blood child Insu who is born to a mother who is a Korean prostitute and a father who is US force and shows directly an unhappy life of "Amerasian" directly so it has a special meaning of having discrimination from other existing literatures. From this point of view, we can categorize Heinz Insu Fenkl's "Memories of My Ghost Brother" as not only a Korean literature but also a national literature with possiblity of a Global literature. Having watched critically for existing arguments which only emphasize theory of postcolonialism so this literature's peculiarity is ignored or only one aspect such as sharmanism so it stays in fragmentary consideration, I would like to look into its time and place and patterns of characters concretely with "rebellious ones" from "Memories of My Ghost Brother" as the central figure. In the first chapter, we will look into these "rebellious ones" who dream of Korea's 'Americanization' and 'Americanism' in 1960s which is its timely background, and then we will look into an exceptional condition of G.I. camp towns and these "rebellious ones" who live as "Politics of Exlusion". Heinz Insu Fenlk's "Memories of My Ghost Brother" vividly describes life in 1960's G.I. camp towns including US force in Korea, female prostitutes in camp towns, unhappy lives of half-blood children and even political relationships between U.S. and Korea during that period.
