초록

1920년대 미국에서 흑인의 대이동, 북부의 산업화, 도시화가 일어나고 있을 때 미국 흑인작가들은 새로운 흑인의 정체성을 확립하고자 하였다. “새로운 흑인”이라는 개념은 사회적인 위협이라는 압박에서 벗어나고 모방 또는 열등감을 떨쳐버리는 것을 의미하는 것으로 미국 흑인으로서 독특한 정체성을 갖게 되었다. 라슨은 실험적인 인물로 도시에서 자유로움을 구가하는 헬가라는 인물을 작품 『퀵샌드』에 설정한다. 이 주인공은 자신이 만족하는 것을 이룰 때까지 낙소스, 시카고, 뉴욕, 코펜하겐 등 여러 장소를 옮겨가며 끊임없이 그녀의 정체성을 찾으려고 한다. 주목할 만한 점은 헬가는 다른 동시대의 주인공들과 비교해 볼 때 좀 더 자유롭게 자신의 의지대로 움직이는 인물로 그려진다는 것이다. 그러나 그녀는 자신이 만족하는 자아를 쉽게 실현하지 못하는데 이는 외적인 환경이 억압의 기제로 계속 작용하여 그녀의 욕망을 무의식적으로 억제하게 하기 때문이다. 이런 관점에서 볼 때 헬가가 여러 장소를 돌아다니며 만족스러운 자아를 찾아 정착하지 못하는 근본적인 원인은 내적 및 외적인 요소에 의해 자신 속에 내재화된 인종적인 문제에서 기인한다고 볼 수 있겠다. 이 글에서는 헬가의 인종적인 정체성과 관련해 그녀가 꿈을 실현하는 일련의 과정에서 겪게 되는 여러 상황을 각기 다른 장소에서 보여주는 주인공의 각각의 반응에 초점을 맞추어 고찰한다. 궁극적으로 헬가의 자아실현이 실패하게 되는 데는 내적으로는 욕망의 억제, 외적으로는 인종과 관련해 뿌리 깊게 심어놓은 선입견이 서로 밀접한 연관성이 있음을 밝히는 것이다. 다시 말해 헬가의 자아실현은 궁극적으로 내적 및 외적 환경에 의해 이미 실패가 예견되어 있었다는 것을 규명하고자 한다.
