초국가성은 ‘국가’라는 구조 혹은 실체의 원근법 밖에 존재하는 민족국가 이후의 새로운 상상력, 민족국가의 범주를 넘어서는 새로운 형태의 연대와 지배방식에 사유할 수 있는 단초가 되지만, 그 반대편에서 초국가주의가 미국을 중심으로 한 문화적 동질화와 전지구적 불평등을 은폐하는 기제가 될 수도 있다는 불안감 또한 상존하는 것을 부인할 수는 없다. 이러한 초국가성의 양면성이 가장 미국적인 동질화와 안정성의 공간인 제2차 세계대전 이후의 교외와 만날 때 어떤 문제의식을 제기할 수 있을까? 이 논문의 목적은 바로 이 질문으로부터 출발하여 창래 리의 『제스처 인생』에 재현된 전후 미국 교외공간의 의미를 분석하는 것이다. 뉴욕 주의 부유한 교외에서 평범하고 안정된 은퇴생활을 즐기고 있는 주인공 하타의 삶에는 일본에 의한 조선의 식민지 지배, 태평양 전쟁의 상흔, 냉전시기의 정치적 역학 속에서 이뤄진 한반도의 분단과 내전, 그리고 전후 미국에서의 대규모 교외화라는 복잡하게 교차하는 역사의 흔적이 각인되어 있다. 인종적․문화적으로 혼종화된 주체이기도 한 하타에게 전후 미국의 교외는 역사적 고통과 과거의 악몽으로부터 역사적․정서적 거리감을 제공하는 ‘제스처의 공간’으로 작용한다. 하타의 ‘제스처 인생’은 이러한 ‘제스처의 공간’에서 사회적 관계의 역동성과 초국가적 역사성을 봉인하려는 것으로 요약된다. 그러나 역설적이게도 스스로를 주변화시킴으로써 ‘제스처 인생’에 침잠하게 된 하타의 삶의 고난은 바로 ‘제스처의 공간’이 제공하는 ‘공간의 제스처’를 받아들이는 것에서 기인하는 것임이 드러난다. 미국의 교외공간과 초국가적 역사의 역동성이 겹치며 그려내는 하타의 삶의 풍경은 ‘국가’라는 단일 이름의 서사로 자행되는 억압의 구조 그리고 그 구조를 교란하는 다양한 층위의 갈등, 출동, 모순을 드러내는 초국가성이 역으로 그 스스로를 본질화하고 사회적 관계와 역사적 교차성을 탈역사화시킬 수 있는 위험에 대한 의미심장한 경고로 읽힐 수 있다.
