Abstract

This paper aims at exploring the ways in which the protagonist/ narrator Franklin Hata in Chang-rae Lee’s A Gesture Life transforms from a nameless Orientals to a respectable citizen of the United States. This study also asks what it means for Asian Americans to be assimilated into the dominant culture of the US. In this novel, Hata’s life-long struggle for assimilation, unexpectedly, results in repeating and reproducing hegemonic racial discourses and power structure. Such an unwanted situation implies that uncritical pursuit of assimilation on the part of Asian Americans is very likely to become a social machine that not only reinforces so-called whiteness, but also produces social violences on other racial minorities such as African Americans. Here arises an important ethical question about assimilation. In answering this complicate problem, this paper defines Hata’s strategy of assimilation as “decency” and explicates how it works particularly in his troubled relationships with his adopted daughter, his beloved house, and his neighbors both black and white.
