Abstract
Purpose: There is a paucity on the overview for the size of the faculty in medical schools and their specialties, and the status of 'inbreeding', which is very peculiar in Korea. Methods: Based on [Current Educational Status of Medical Schools] by the Korean Council of Deans of Medical College, we have made data base of all professors enrolled. Results: There are 7,867 professors in 41 medical schools by May 2002. Among them, 7,280 (92.5%) were medical doctors (MD). There were 1,063 new professors since May 1998. The biggest one has 808 and the smallest has 46 professors. Although there is a small increase in number of professors in most specialties, dermatology, plastic surgery, ophthalmology, ENT, and psychiatry showed a small decrease. It is because many doctors of those specialties has opened private clinics after 2002's Dispute on Health Insurance System. The MD faculties of 8 medical schools, which were established before 1965, comprised of 83.8% of their own graduates, while those of 14 medical schools (established 1965 - 1982) have 37.3% of their own graduates. Conclusion: The ‘inbreeding’ of faculties were prominent in old schools. However, this inbreeding tendency could be also found in younger schools. Without an early exposure and communication to other institutes or medical school's hospital, the ‘inbreeding’ phenomenon could not be improved.
