로베르 브레송 영화에 대한 초월주의적인 해석은 오랫동안 그의 영화를 평가하는 주요한 관점으로 여겨져 왔다. 이 해석은 그 진부함에도 불구하고 여전히 한국에서는 그 영향력을 잃지 않고 있다. 초월주의적인 해석은 영화의 이미지가 신성의 현재성을 드러내는 것이라는 전제에 의거하여 브레송 영화의 주된 소재인 죽음과 감옥을 기독교적인 테마인 구속과 자유, 구원과 은총의 테마로 해석한다. 브레송의 종교적인 소재를 다루는 영화뿐만 아니라 비종교적인 소재를 다룬 영화로 까지 확대된 이 해석은 인물의 성격과 관계, 주제에 대한 서술체 분석에 국한된다. 초월주의적인 해석은 영화적 서술체의 논리적인 일관성을 추구하고 이미지의 의미를 환원가능한 이념 혹은 개념에서 구한다. 이러한 초월주의적인 해석은 이미지와 세계와의 연속성, 정합성에 기초한다. 그러나 <시네마토그라프>를 통해 자신의 창조적인 영화이론을 확립한 브레송은 실재를 내러티브와 지각, 믿음에 기초한 영화적인 인과성을 통해서가 아니라, 비의미적인 이미지들간의 불연속적인 몽타쥬를 통해서만 발견 가능한 것으로 간주한다. 즉, 실재란 인물들간의 관계, 인물들의 심리, 이야기의 연속성이 단절되고, 영화의 이해에 균열이 일어날 때 도달 할 수 있는 우연적인 것, 의외의 것이다. 본 논문은 이러한 브레송의 영화이론에 비추어, 초월주의적인 해석의 주된 테마였던 죽음을 브레송은 화면과 화면 밖의 불연속적인 몽타쥬를 통해 어떻게 나타내는지를 분석함으로써, 초월주의적인 비평의 문제점을 밝히는데 목적이 있다.
Abstract
The critic of spiritualist in the cinema of Robert Bresson has been the main point of view for a long time. In the spite of an obsolescence, this perspective has not lost its influence in Korea. The argument of the spiritualist consiste in the premise that the image reveal the presence divine. In accordance of the premise, the frequent motif of the film of Bresson, death and prison, has been analyzed the confinement and freedom, salvation and grace. Dealing with religious theme as well as non religious theme, the critic of spiritualist limite in the analyse of the narrative, such as the character's personality and relationships, theme. This critic seeks to the logical consistency in the film narrative and consider the meaning of the image as the reduction of a idea or a concept. This perspective is based on the continuity and persistency between the image and the reel. However, Bresson’s <Cinématographe>, his creative theory on the cinema, consider the reel to the discovery through the montage discontinuous of the images insignificants, not through the causality narrative, perceptive and belief. In other words, the reel is accident, unexpected as occur on the break in the continuity of the relation between the characters, of psychology, of the story as far as the incomprehension for the film. Our study aim to clarify the problem of the spiritualism by analyzing how the death is figured in the bresson’s film by the discontinuity of the freming on several sequences, as regard to the death which is also the theme for the spiritualist.
