Abstract

In the intellectual history of traditional East Asia issues of emotion and ethics were closely associated not only with the human mind and the moral mind, but with the four beginnings and the seven emotions. We witness a historical evolution of the issue to the debates surrounding the four‐seven thesis and further to the general theory of emotion and will in Choson Neo Confucianism. The main purpose of this tractatus is to examine the development and advancement of the four-seven debates with Kobong and T’oegye for eight years. For this, First, we will put in order the theory of the moral mind and the human mind in Song dynasty. Second, we will also give an outline of the four moral mind and the human mind related to li and qi before this debates in Choson. And finally, we will analyze and categorize the four seven debates into classified assertions. Through this study, we will see not only the development of the four seven debates originated in the theories of the moral mind and the human mind, but also the characteristics of them. As a necessary consequence we will find out the meaning and position of this debates in East Asian neo-confucianism.
