에피쿠로스는 <메노이케우스에게 보내는 편지>에서 그의 가르침을 종합적이고 체계적으로 진술했다. 그는 행복하기 위해서는 철학을 해야 한다고 말한다. 그리고 행복하기 위한 방법으로 제1원리를 제시하고 있다. 우리가 철학을 해야 하는 긴급성과 유용성에 대해서, 그리고 쾌락을 추구하는 삶에 대해서 진술하고 있다. 우리가 불행한 것은 몸과 마음의 고통과 두려움이라는 부정적 정념들 때문이다. 이들 부정적 정념들의 원인은 욕망과 무지이다. 따라서 그의 가르침은 무지의 원인과 욕망에 대해 분석과 행복해지는 실천적 방법들로 구성되어 있다. 그의 가르침이 적극적으로 쾌락을 추구하는 키레네학파와 다른 점은 일시적인 감각적 쾌락을 끊임없이 추구하기 보다는 쾌락이 근거하는 욕망에 대한 분석을 통해 인간의 내면에서 행복의 실마리를 찾았다는 점이다. 그리고 신과 죽음이라는 문제가 두려움과 공포의 정념을 일으키는 실존적 상황에 대한 분석이 그의 윤리학의 중요한 주제이다. 따라서 본 논문은 우리가 일회적 삶에서 추구해야 하는 행복에 대한 그의 사상을 <메노이케우스에게 보내는 편지>을 중심으로 재구성해 보고자 한다.
Abstract
Epicurus stated his teachings synthetically and systematically on the 'Epistolē Pros Menoika'. He said that we should do philosophy to be happy and suggested the first principle to live happily. He stated the urgency and usefulness for doing philosophy, and life of pursuing pleasure. Human beings are not happy because of the pain of body and fear of mind. The cause of these negative pathos are desire and ignorance. Therefore his teachings consist of the causes of ignorance and the analysis of desire, and the practical method for a happy life. His teachings differs with Cyrenaic entirely. Cyrenaic pursed momentary pleasure positively. On the other hand, Epicurus looked for clues of happiness in human mind through the analysis of desire that carries pleasure. The important issues of the ethics of Epicurus’ are an analysis of existential situation that the awareness of god and death arouse the negative pathos of fear and horror. This paper examines 'Epistolē Pros Menoika' to study his thoughts about happiness that humankind should seek in life to be just a flash in the pan.
