Abstract
The I Ching (Book of Changes) has been recognized by far as a classical text, ideal for cultivating the true self, which extracts the duty and obligation of the superior man out of the natural laws. It is broadly accepted as the essence of truths that expounds the Way of Man faceted from the Way of Heaven, but its oracle is whatsoever no more than a mirror of the mind that persists over times as a philosophical taxonomy far beyond modern scientific theories. So far as modern science and the I Ching are concerned, the gap in between is as high as one between the ideal and the real. Despite the foregoing, the commentary in Xi Ci Zhuan, “near at hand, he learned each part of his body (近取諸身), and at a distance, he understood everything in nature (遠取諸物)”, is in accord with the natural laws in the I Ching, which arouses an expectation that we still fail to find it out. This paper demonstrates that the rationale of ‘symmetric reflection’ that hexagram Huo-ze-kui (火澤睽) has in the I Ching summarizes the law of nature as found in visual pathway of humans and animals. Such unfamiliar expressions as ‘a looking cart (見輿)’ and ‘a natural husband (元夫)’ that constitute the Guaci(卦辭) and the Yaoci(爻辭) are all the metaphorical commentaries referring to complicated actions that involve the brain via the optic nerve at the visual pathway. Provided all 64 hexagrams of the I Ching including Huo-ze-kui individually represent the core extracted from the principle of interactions between the human body and the myriad things in nature, it is time that the I Ching has to be stepped to meet science, apart from a system of divination relying on spiritual insight.
