Abstract
The aim of this paper is to illuminate whether it can be a dynamic force of social change by analyzing the ‘resentment’ feelings in Hume's philosophy. Hume argues through moral sentiment theories how to become a moral being while enjoying culture according to his abilities and tastes in 18th century commercial civil society. Hume attempts to show that there are moral and social transformation aspects of passions such as ‘pride’ and ‘resentment’. According to Hume, the reason why humans struggle socially is to secure moral identity by gaining social recognition rather than for the individual's natural self-preservation. Hume opposes the Hobbes’s concept of struggle, that man seeks only self-interests and that social struggle is nothing more than a self-preservation struggle between such individuals. In this sense, in the Enquiries, Hume talks about the right to ‘national resistance,’ which revised Hobbes' position as a condition that requires justice. The reason for this is ‘resentment’. The ‘resentment’, Hume said, is intended to provide a normative basis for social struggle. In other words, when human beings are neglected or experience injustice in the process of socially pragmatic relations, it is a psychological moment that triggers the struggle for recognition. Hume believes that in order for resentment to be effective, a scenario is needed where conventions can be the rule of justice. In this sense, resentment feelings can play an important role in Hume’s moral philosophy as well as in social justice.
