Abstract
Bifurcated ontology is the hallmark of Descartes’s dualism. There are two substances and properties on each side. Physical substance has only material properties and mental substance has only mental properties. At first sight, physicalist ontology seems to be plainer than any other ‘-ism’ including Descartes’s dualism because of the monistic characteristic of itself. But layered ontology, which is favored by all versions of physicalism, gives multifarious features to physicalism. Jaegwon Kim also endorses this ontology in his reductionism through his supervenience thesis and supervenience argument. But he slightly changes his position on a layered model after a generalization argument and drainage argument by the property of dualism. In Kim 2005, the distinction between level and order by which the layered model gets refined and is immune to criticism is a critical role in Kim’s answer to non-reductive physicalist argument. But he does not develop it during ongoing dialectics and seems to abandon it. For it has never been used after Kim 2005, and he puts forward domain ontology instead of the layered model. If we want to retain layered ontology, we must prefer a tree-like to a ladder-like model. Non-reductionism needs a layered model to keep irreducible layers between properties and autonomy of special sciences; whereas Kim has no trouble with changing his mind because a layered model is most compatible with reductionism. We are going to extract and clarify his layered ontology (in Ch. 2) and examine and access refinement on it (in Ch. 3) and retraction of it (in Ch. 4).
