Abstract
My aim in this paper is to hold that any form of mind-body identity theory, whether the type identity held by Smart or the functional identity held by Kim, is committed to that of eliminativism. It seems difficult for Smart's identity theory to surmount the problem raised by the argument from the multiple realizability of mental properties. The supervenience argument Kim espoused to argue against the argument does not seem to fare well. It appears that the matters of the ontological parsimony and the simplicity do not work here. I don't see a big difference between Smart's and Kim's functional identity theories in that both of them rely on mind-body type identity. More seriously, Kim's functional reductive physicalism cannot avoid the problem of epiphenomenalism. For Kim himself takes his position to be what I, in other papers, called the strict interpretation of events rather than the loose interpretation. If we take his position as strict, events cannot be redescribed and therefore there will be a serious multiplication of events. Therefore, in developing the functional reductive identity theory, his claim that a mental event can be reduced to a physical event in virtue of the identifying the former with the latter can't be plausible: It is counter-intuitive. Throughout this paper, the principle of causal efficacy of mental properties qua mental that any theory of mental causation should not violate will play a crucial role in developing my theory of mental causation.
