지식의 원천으로는 흔히 이성, 경험, 권위, 직관 등이 거론된다. 이 원천들 가운데 직관은 객관성을 확보하기 어렵다는 이유로, 20세기 초반의 철학자들에 의해서 거부되었다. 이들의 영향과 달리, 1970년대부터 철학에서 직관을 증거로 사용하는 사례들이 점차 증가하기 시작했다. 그러나 오늘날 철학에서 지식의 원천으로서 직관을 사용하는 일은 여전히 논란이 되고 있다. 이러한 경향에 대하여 회의적인 어떤 철학자들은 직관을 증거로 사용한 철학적 접근이 아주 나쁜 착상이었다고 주장하거나, 우리가 호소할 일련의 고정된 직관은 없는 것 같다고 주장한다. 이에 반해 또 다른 철학자들은 직관이 증거로 사용되는 경향을 옹호하고자 한다. 이 논문은 직관에 관한 이와 같은 입장들 각각을 검토함으로써 두 입장 사이의 논점을 명료히 하려고 한다. 그러기 위해서는 먼저 직관을 증거로 사용한다는 말의 의미가 무엇인지를 정확히 밝힐 필요가 있다. 이와 관련해서 20세기에서 현재에 이르기까지의 직관에 관한 논의도 간략히 소개하겠다. 그런 다음 직관을 거부하는 주장과 직관을 옹호하는 주장을 살펴보고 검토하겠다. 마지막으로 직관을 옹호하는 철학자들이 직관을 거부하는 철학자들의 주장을 거부할 이유들이 있지만, 그렇다고 해서 직관을 증거로 사용하는 일이 결정적으로 옹호되고 있는 것은 아님을 보이겠다.
Abstract
Reason, experience, authority and intuition are often regarded as reliable sources of knowledge. Among them, in the early twentieth century, a majority of philosophers rejected knowledge by intuition because they found it difficult to guarantee its objectivity. Despite their influence, since 1970s, intuition has been more increasingly utilized as evidences in philosophy. However, today, the status of intuition as a source of knowledge is still controversial in philosophy; some of skeptical philosophers oppose to the attempts to accept intuition as trustworthy evidence, and even question whether there exist any fixed set of intuitions to which we can safely rely on. On the other hand, others try to demonstrate good reason that we can consider it reliable. In this paper, I will make it more clear what the points are at issue by examining different views about intuition. In order to do this, first I will clarify the meaning of intuition, introducing the important epistemological discussions of it from the early twentieth century to present. Second, I will consider and examine the arguments of both philosophers who reject and accept intuition as a source of knowledge. Finally, I conclude that the use of intuition as evidences cannot be crucially defended, arguing against philosophers who approve of knowledge by intuition.
