Abstract

Influenced by Deleuze's two famous books, Difference et Repetition(1968) and The Logic of Sense(1969), Michel Foucault wrote his essay, Theatrum Philosophicum (1970). Here his human-focused discourse analysis was applied as a methodology for classifying the historical periods in the history of western art-the Renaissance, the Classical Age, and modernity. Furthermore, with a more visual explanation of the art worlds of Andy Warhol, Gérard Fromanger, and Duane Michals, he declared the characteristics of contemporary art as anti-Platonism. The common concern of the two was directed towards the difference between essence and appearance of the things based upon Platonism. While the former focused upon the ethical thinking within the concept of simulacrum by Plato, the latter maintained the viewpoint that Platonism is the product of will containing simulacrum-event. As a method for overcoming Platonism, Foucault provided archaic morality, ethics in art, and deeply ethical meditation on simulacrum. It was a tool to reflect how the contemporary artwork starts from the past visual convention, the space or limit of representation, which was explained by the concept of modernity. And by comparing Greek aphrodisia with Christian flesh experience, he described the uniqueness of ethical essence of Greece. Foucault's attitude towards modernism quite different from that of Deleuze was to direct to reactivation of classical form. Deleuze looked for the concept of simulacrum from individual artist such as Warhol, Bacon, but Foucault reviewed Surrealism with the concept of modernity as a momentum of modern art. René In an analysis of Magritte's artwork, Ceci n’est pas une pipe(1948), he saw a revival of painting's referential function, which he concluded as the concept of affirmation of non-affirmation in painting. Finally, in his essay, Theatrum Philosophicum, Foucault finished his meditation on Magritte and modern aesthetics with a mention on Warhol. To paint is not to to affirm the necessity of identification any more, but to circulate the images that weaken the original work's assertion. Furthermore, he thought that text and image are endlessly circulating around thing-itself, with an argument that the modern as well as contemporary arts are the system of similitude, that is, simulacrum as same as that by Baudrillard.
