예술이란 무엇인가? 들뢰즈 철학에서 예술은 힘의 감각적 실현이다. 들뢰즈에 의하면 예술의 과제는 판에 박힌 재현의 형식을 넘어 비가시적인 힘을 드러나게 하는 것이다. 특히 회화는 구상적 재현을 벗어나 클리셰에 가려져 보이지 않는 감각을 보이게 하는 것을 본연의 과제로 삼는다. 그런데 이러한 감각의 해방은 추상에 의해 이루어진 것이 아닌가? 잘 알려져 있듯 추상 미술은 구상적 재현으로부터의 탈주를 기치로 출발하였다. 그런데 들뢰즈 철학에서 추상 미술에 대한 평가는 일관적이지 않다. 들뢰즈는 한편으로 추상 회화가 구상의 한계를 돌파했다는 점을 인정하면서도, 다른 한편으로는 그것이 여전히 판에 박힌 것에 불과하다고 비판한다. 본 논문의 목적은 추상 회화에 대한 들뢰즈의 단편적인 언급들을 재구성함으로써, 들뢰즈 회화론에서 추상이 지니는 의의와 한계를 밝히는 데 있다. 왜 추상은 구상을 벗어나는 충분한 방법이 되지 못하는가? 이 물음에 답하는 가운데 들뢰즈 철학에서 추상의 역량 및 한계가 무엇인지를 확인할 수 있을 것이며, 나아가 왜 프랜시스 베이컨의 작품이 들뢰즈 회화론에서 핵심적인 지위를 차지하는지를 설명할 수 있을 것이다. 아울러 이를 통해 들뢰즈 철학에서 예술이 판에 박힌 재현을 넘어 새로운 사유를 창조하는 고유한 실천임을 규명할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
What is art? In Deleuze’s philosophy, art is the sensible realization of force. According to Deleuze, the task of art is to reveal invisible forces by transcending the fixed forms of representation, and within this, the task of painting is to break free from figuration and make visible the sensations obscured by clichés. But is this not achieved through abstraction? It is well known that abstract art began with the aim of escaping from figurative representation. However, Deleuze’s evaluation of abstract art is inconsistent. On the one hand, he acknowledges that a transformation away from figuration was achieved through abstract art; on the other hand, he criticizes abstraction for becoming yet another form of clichéd painting. The aim of this paper is to reconstruct Deleuze’s fragmented statements on abstract art in a systematic way and to clarify his thinking regarding the problem of abstraction. What are the powers and limitations of abstract art? Why can abstraction not serve as a genuine means of escaping figuration? By answering these questions, this paper seeks to accurately grasp the problem of figuration and abstraction in Deleuze’s theory of painting and to elucidate why the work of Francis Bacon holds a central position within it. Through this, we will ultimately clarify the unique role of art in Deleuze’s philosophy.
