Abstract
What is the nature of human welfare? Three types of answer to this question have been presented and hotly debated: According to hedonism, pleasure, which is a distinctive kind of mental state, is the core of welfare. On the family of desire-satisfaction theories, one's welfare level corresponds to the degree of his desire-satisfaction. Finally, the objective list theory attempts to provide the list of items that constitute human welfare. Typical list includes knowledge, autonomous achievements, intimate relationship, and aesthetic enjoyment. The first goal of this paper is to defend the objective list theory against some customary objections towards it. The second goal of the paper is to discuss some problems in distribution, which arise from adopting desire-satisfaction theories of welfare. The paper tries to show that if one accepts the objective list theory, these problems will be alleviated or lost their theoretical and practical bites.
