Abstract

In his definition of the cardinal number Frege depends on a very particular assumption, which I call “Frege Assumption.” According to Frege Assumption, for two concepts to be numerically-identical means for there to be a 1-1 correspondence between them. The validity of Frege Assumption depends on what we mean by a “1-1 correspondence.” On the one hand, if we mean an actual relation between objects, then the Assumption is not valid. There are cases of numerical identity which have nothing to do with any actual 1-1 correspondences whatsoever. On the other hand, albeit known less, by a “1-1 correspondence” Frege actually means some non-actual, unheard-of relation . But the relation does not bring out the definition of a cardinal number. A relation as such does its job only because of the content it has. But the content of the relation has nothing to do with numerical identity. The opposite impression is created only when Frege smuggles the moment of activity into the relation and thereby makes the relation into what it is not. That moment of activity is an item of unmistakably non-Fregean genre. In either case, therefore, the upshot is that Frege has not come up with any definition of a cardinal number. But this purely negative result conceals a positive clue for the nature of a cardinal number, since the just mentioned non-Fregean moment must betray the secret of a cardinal number.
