Abstract
Frege’s well-known definition of an individual natural number is rooted into the assumption that a natural number is ontologically an object. The paper is a critical examination on that assumption. It is pursued in two directions. If, first, a natural number were ontologically an object then the sign for it would not count at all. This contradicts our inchoate conviction that a sign for a natural number is used, first and foremost, for the counting purpose. Secondly, there is indeed such a thing as a sign that does count, except that it is a sign of a totally different kind than that of an object. We find such a counting sign in what Wittgenstein calls “language-games.” Thereby we will be delivering a sense in which every entity is born and reared in language-games.
