본고는 에스닉 문화(ethnic culture)라는 관점을 감안한 환경 주제로 <반지의 제왕>에 대해 검토해 보았다. ‘에스닉’이란 민속적 혹은 토속적인 양식을 총칭하는 말이며 민족지학(ethnography)과도 당연히 연결되므로, 민족(ethnos)에 대한 기술 혹은 문화에 대한 서술의 차원에서 접근하였다. 영국적인 내용이 많은 <반지의 제왕>은 환경 문화(environment culture) 문제와도 결부되는 면 또한 많다. 인류와 종족의 환경, 자연과 산업 등과 같은 주제들이 이야기 속에 내포되어 있는 탓이다. 특히 노르웨이의 심층생태학자(deep ecologists)인 아르네 네스(Arne Naess)의 이론을 J. R. R. 톨킨의 작가적 사유와 <반지의 제왕>의 세계관에 연결시켜 보았다. 중간계의 종족들이 이 환경 관련 내용들을 대변하고 있으며, <반지의 제왕>이 현실을 반영하고 있으면서도 현실을 넘어서고자 한다는 면, 환경 이론으로서의 심층생태학이 현실에 많은 영향을 주고자 하면서도 어느 정도 이상적인 측면이 있다는 점을 확인할 수 있다. 에스닉 문화적 측면을 내재한 판타지 이야기인 <반지의 제왕>은 영화를 통해 그리고 환경 주제와 관련해서 에스닉 문화를 넘어서는 작품이 된 것 같기도 하다.
Abstract
This article examines The Lord of the Rings story regarding environmental issue in the vision of ethnic culture. Since ‘ethnic’ is a word which indicates a pattern and form of local or folk, and is definitely connected with ethnography, my approach is somehow a kind of cultural description or ethnic narration. It is also right to say that LotR, which includes ideas of British national aspect, is deeply intertwined with environmental culture issue. Environment of human, species, nature and industry is one of the main topics of the LotR narrative. Especially, I linked the ideas of Norwegian deep ecologist, Arne Naess with J. R. R. Tolkien’s mind and the world view of LotR. We could find the idea that the species of the middle-earth reveals the environmental issues; LotR reflects the reality but simultaneously tries to overcome the reality; and deep ecology seems to be an ideal thought in a sense. It seems that a fantasy story LotR is a work which transcends the context of ethnic culture concerning environmental issues and through films.
