Abstract
The Lord of the Rings, a high fantasy fiction, appears to be a Catholic story, a myth of creation delivering spiritual grace through temporal rites. This paper examines the significance of the absolute ring as an ‘anti-sacrament’ through the structure of the story working effectively based on the greedy bearer, Gollum, somehow susceptible to ‘anti-sacramental’ power and destruction, and the apostolic bearer, Frodo, taking the pattern of Christ’s suffer and salvation and Christian values such as love, courage, sacrifice to save the world. Such a mythic structure includes the episode where Gollum, the corrupt Hobbit, becomes an evil, with the ring, falling down into the lava on the Mountain of Doom; the episode where Denethor, the weak king of Gondor, leads into skepticism of humanity and death; and the final war episode where the wizard, Gandalf, the king of Rohan, Theoden, and the last hope of humanity, Aragorn, remind us of newly reborn humanity which functions to experience an ‘anti-sacrament’ of the ring as mistrust and evil.
