이 글의 목적은 헤겔(G.W.F. Hegel)이 『정신현상학』(Phänomenologie des Geistes, 1807)에서 말하는 ‘Selbst’의미를 해명하는 것이다. 통상적으로 ‘자기(自己)’, ‘자신(自身)’ 혹은 ‘자아(自我)’ 등으로 번역되고 있는 ‘Selbst’는 철학자들에 따라 다소 상이한 의미로 사용되는데, 특히 『정신현상학』의 <서문>[Vorrede]의 분석을 통하여, Selbst는 Substanz [실체]와 Subjekt [주체]라는 두 개념이 지닌 의미를 자신 속에 포함하고 있는 통일체라는 사실이 드러나게 된다. 실체는 자기 동일적이며 독립적인 존재자이고 실체는 끊임없이 운동⋅변화하는 것이다. 참된 것을 실체로서만이 아니라 마찬가지로 주체로서도 파악하고 표명해야 한다는 헤겔의 주장은 “참된 것은 완전한 것”이라는 그의 진술과 연관하여 해석할 때 올바로 이해될 수 있다. 왜냐하면 실체만으로도 주체만으로도 완전한 것이 될 수 없고, 참된 것, 완전한 것은 이 둘의 통일일 수밖에 없기 때문이다. 그리하여 헤겔철학에 있어서 실체와 주체의 통일체로서의 자기[Selbst]는 생명체, 자기의식, 그리고 또한 절대자[신(神)]를 지시하는 데까지 이르게 된다.
Abstract
This essay aims at elucidating the meaning of ‘Selbst’ in Hegel‘s Phenomenology of Spirit(1807). For this purpose it analyzes especially the Preface of the Phenomenology of Spirit. It will eventually come to light that ‘Selbst’ is the terminology, which includes the meaning of both ‘Substance’ and ‘Subject’ in itself. According to Hegel, everything hangs on apprehending and expressing “the True not merely as substance but also equally as subject.” What does this claim mean? It can be correctly understood in relation to the statement “the true is the whole”(“Das Wahre ist das Ganze“). A Substance is an unchangeable independent real entity, while a subject is a ceaselessly moving, changing being. Neither only a Substnace, nor only a Subject can be entitled as a ‘Selbst’ (Self) in Hegel‘s system. A ‘Selbst’ is a Whole, that is consisted of Substance and Subject. In Hegel‘s Philosophy, this also represents the Absolute, which is a Spirit. The Absolte has also the structure of the connection of the connection and the non-connection, or the structure of the identity of identity and non-identity. The ’Selbst‘ as a Unity of Substantiality and Subjectivity can be called Soul (die Seele, ψυχή).
