Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analysis the pattern and origin of tree worship in India by looking for the ancient Hindu literature and scenes of tree worship depicted in Buddhist stupas. The origin of tree worship seen in ancient Indian stupas is based on indigenous Indian folk beliefs, and the scene of tree worship in the stupa attempted to prove that the form of indigenous faith reflected the transition to established religion. Ancient literature, which is considered to be the most important in Hinduism, was chosen for this purpose. And through digital and analog indexing, several representative scenes of tree worship were selected, and their contents, philosophical/religious background, and significance were summarized. In the case of stupas, I analyzed the types and contents of the tree worship, focusing on the sculptures of the Sanchi and Bharhut stupas. Through this literature research, it was confirmed that India has a long tradition of tree worship. And tree worship sculptures in Sanchi stupa symbolizes the sacredness of nature, the symbolism of the Buddha, the integration of local traditions into Buddhist faith, and emphasizes the convergence of indigenous religious practices and Buddhism
