한국 도교사에 보이는 도참과 비기의 위상문제-조선시대를 중심으로

도참은 정치적인 의도를 가진 미래예언으로, 한국의 도교사에서도 도참류의 미래예언이 몇군데 등장하고 있음을 볼 수 있다. 특히 조선시대 도교서에서는 임진왜란과 병자호란의 발발을 예언한 것과 조선 후기에 도교가 부흥할 것을 예언하고 있다. 그러나 이 예언은 정치적인 의도를 갖거나 현실에서의 적극적인 행동으로 이어지지 않고 있다는 점에서 도참이라기 보다는 단순한 미래 예언에 가깝다고 할 수 있다. 특히 중국도교가 800년뒤에 조선에서 부흥한다는 비기는 결국 조선의 숭유(崇儒)정책 아래에서 거의 도맥이 끊어질 듯하던 상황속에서 종리권(鍾離權)의 입을 빌려 조작된 것이다. 다시 말해 이는 임진왜란 직후 명나라로부터 뜻밖에 전파된 관우신앙의 흐름을 타고, 도인(道人)들에 의해 당시 조선에 도교가 부활할 것을 기원하는 구도(求道)와 호교(護敎)의 논리로 조작되었다고 할 수 있다. 그러나 엄밀히 말하면 한국 도교사에 등장하는 도참은 당시의 시대상황이 반영되어 나타난 것일 뿐 도교에서 기원했거나 도교와 본질적 관련이 없다. 도참은 본질적으로 정치적인 미래 예언이지만 도교는 신선이 되거나 장생의 도를 추구할 뿐이지 본래가 현실정치에 참여하거나 정치적 의도를 가진 예언을 할 이유가 없기 때문이다. 이런 점에서 조선 도교에서 나타난 미럐예언의 본질은 도인들의 수행의 결과로 얻은 미래예지력의 표현이거나 도교의 전통을 지키려는 호교론의 표현일 뿐이라고 해야 정확할 것이다.
Abstract
Docham means prediction of the future made with political intention, and several Docham predictions are found in the history of Korean Taoism. In particular, it was predicted in Taoist books during the Joseon Dynasty that the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592 and the Manchu Invasion of Korea in 1636 would break out and Taoism would be restored during the late Joseon Dynasty. However, such predictions are close to simple foretellings of the future instead of Docham predictions as they didn’t have political intention and were not used for assertive behavior in real life. Especially, the Bigi (secret writings) which said that Chinese Taoism would be restored in Korea 800 years later was invented by putting those words into the mouth of Zhongli Quan, at a time when Taoism was on the verge of extinction due to the government policy to give preference to Confucianism during the Joseon Dynasty. In other words, such stories were fabricated by the Taoists who sought the truth and tried to protect the religion, wishing for the restoration of Taoism in Joseon with the trend of the belief in Guan Yu which was unexpectedly transmitted from Ming China after the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. However, strictly speaking the Docham, which appeared in the history of Korean Taoism, merely reflected the situation of the times and was neither related to the essence of Taoism nor originated from Taoism. Because while Docham is essentially political prediction of the future, Taoism only respects hermits and pursues longevity and there is no reason for Taoism to participate in real politics or make predictions with political intention. In this sense, it would be accurate to say that the essence of the prediction of the future appearing in the Taoism of the Joseon Dynasty was an expression of the power to foretell the future which was a result of the practice of Taoists or the expression of their will to protect the religion so that they could protect their Taoism traditions against outside pressure.
