초록

Vegetable oils (triacylglycerols) produced mainlyin seeds of plants are used for valuable foods that supplyessential fatty acids for humans as well as industrial rawmaterials and biofuel production. As the demanding forvegetable oils has increased, plant metabolic engineering toproduce triacylglycerols in biomass such as leaves has beenconsidered and explored for alternative source of vegetableoils. Leaves are genetically programmed to supply the fixedcarbon by photosynthesis to other organs for plant developmentand growth. Therefore, in order to produce and accumulatetriacylglycerols in leaves, one should take account ofmultiple metabolic pathways such as carbon flux, competitionof carbohydrate and fatty acid biosynthesis, and triacylglycerolsturnover in leaves. The recent metabolic engineering strategyhas showed potential in which the co-expression of threegenes WRINKLED1, DGAT1, and OLEOSIN involved in thecritical step for increasing the fatty acid synthesis, accumulatingtriacylglycerols, and protecting triacylglycerols, respectivelyproduced higher amount of vegetable oils in leaves. Developingof genetically engineered plants producing vegetable oil inbiomass at non-agricultural lands will be promising to thefuture success of the field.
