Abstract

Raftopoulos argues that perception has to be understood in two different levels: the early vision state and late vision. He describes the early visual stage as stages that process sensible information, and declares that we are not able to consciously access the contents of those stages. On the contrary, we are able to consciously access the content of late vision. Through this distinction, he argues that there could be non-conceptual content at the early vision state which are cognitively impenetrable, whereas there is conceptual content at late vision that are cognitively penetrable. Therefore, the possibility of cognitive penetration determines the conceptual/nonconceptual content of perceptual experience. On this, I attempt to show two problems of cognitive impenetrability of perception: first, it does not clearly show how conceptual impenetrability of early vision determines nonconceptual character of perceptual representational content; second, that if there is causal relationship between the early visual state and the late vision, Raftopoulos has to explain what makes a subject to deploy proper concepts on the content of the early visual stage in late vision. If not, perceptual experience, he defines, does not satisfy ‘correctness condition’ of being representational content, therefore, it may lead us to have a very ambiguous definition of experience. By examining the functional role of concept as the possibility of cognitive penetration in the early visual stage suggested by Toribio and ‘higher-order theory of consciousness’ suggested by Rosenthal, I argue that Raftopoulos fails to reject the main idea of conceptualism that perceptual content must be conceptual in order to be a reason for belief.
