Abstract
In Aristotle’s works, pathē have a wide variety of meanings. This article concerns pathē as emotions. The problem is concerned with the involuntariness and irrationality of emotions that come from its passivity. In this article I emphasize that emotions have a active role in our judgement and action, so that it could contribute human being’s happiness. In order to achieve this end, I examine emotions’ epistemological position in comparison with sensation, belief and phantasia. I argue that for Aristotle emotions belong to the faculty of imagination(phantasia), not belief(doxa) or senasation, and are best characterized as pleasurable or painful images, which are inherently evaluative, non-propositional cognitive appraisals. In conclusion I demonstrate an emotion’s active role in relation to judgement(krisis) and virtuous action.
