Abstract
This paper is an attempt to understand the concept of Necessity presented in Timaeus. I think Necessity should be divided into the wandering cause and the accessory cause. The wandering cause is responsible for the state of raw material before Demiurge begins to intervene. On the other hand, the raw material, when it was persuaded by geometrical shapes and numbers, is used as the accessory cause. This paper first began by examining the existent interpretations concerning the meaning of ‘wandering’, and then tried to assert that wandering cause is not the necessity of law but a necessity that operates outside the law. Because wandering cause is related to the pre-cosmic nature and state of fire, water, air and earth, it should be understood with regard for the nature of Receptacle supposed to be the Third Kind. Through further argument, I attempted to prove that the Receptacle is not mere void space, but provides the material medium for the things being created, resulting in the disorder of the pre-cosmic materials. The pre-cosmic materials are in incessant flux and disorderly motion due to the wandering cause. Although the accessory cause can be used as things conducive to realizing the good, it can not itself bring about the good and beautiful. Plato’s concept of Necessity has an aspect of inevitable limit that is not completely persuaded by intelligence either in the level of the wandering cause or in the level of the accessory cause. For this reason Demiurge can only create the cosmos as good as possible. In emulation of Him, human intelligence takes it as its task to minimize Necessity’s influence and guide Necessity into the direction of the good.
