박정희 시대 한국 민족주의의 다양한 양태를 살펴보는 것이 이 글의 목적이다. 이 글이 주장하려는 바는 두 가지이다. 첫째, 이 시기 한국 민족주의는 방어적 근대화 민족주의, 통일지향적 민족주의, 민족경제지향적 민족주의, 그리고 반미 민족주의라는 네 가지 모습으로 표출되었는데, 각각은당시 한국 민족주의가 직면한 복수의 과제 중 어느 한 측면을 포착하고 있었다. 한국은 후발산업화국가이면서 분단국가이다. 이런 나라에서 민족주의의 과제는 근대화의 달성, 통일을 통한 민족국가의 완성, 탈종속을 통한자주화의 달성, 대미의존 탈피 등으로 다양하게 나타날 수 있다. 이 시기에나타난 네 가지 민족주의적 정향은 각각 경제적 근대화(방어적 근대화 민족주의), 민족국가의 완성(통일지향적 민족주의), 경제적 자주화(민족경제지향적 민족주의), 그리고 반외세 내지는 반미(반미 민족주의)를 각각 목표로 삼아 한국 민족주의를 구성하고 있었다. 둘째, 이들 네 가지 민족주의는 서로 대립하고 있다는 점에서 차별성이 컸지만 그 못지않게 공통성도지니고 있었다. 이들은 공히 국가, 민족, 통일, 계급 등의 거대담론을 강조했고, 어느 한 순간도 민족주의를 떠난 적이 없었다. 이러한 민족(주의) 우위 속에서 개인은 그 자체의 독자성을 지니기보다는 민족 속에 용해되어야하는 존재에 지나지 않았다. 바로 이 점 때문에 민주화 이후 한국의 보수진보 양 진영은 공히 자유주의적 기초가 허약함에서 오는 허점을 보여주고 있다.
Abstract
This essay aims to examine various forms of Korean nationalism under Park Chung Hee regime. The points which this paper would like to argue are two. (1) Korean nationalism in this period was shown in four faces such as nationalism for defensive modernization, for reunification, for building an self-reliant economy, and for anti-America. Each of them grasped one aspects of plural tasks which Korean nationalism had met. Korea is a late industrializing and divided country, in which nationalism has multiple tasks such as modernization, nation-state building through reunification, achieving self-reliant economy, and anti-foreign forces(esp. U.S.A.). (2) There were similarities as well as differences among four forms of Korean nationalism in this period. All of them emphasized macro-discourses such as the state, nation, reunification, class, self-reliance etc.. The individual was not an autonomous entity respected as being-in-itself but only a part attached to the whole(state or nation) and sacrificed itself for the whole. When we consider not only differences but also similarities, we can explain why the progressive forces of Korea sometimes shows collectivist tendencies after democratization.
